Champions for Healthy Kids Grant Recipient

The State Education Resource Center’s Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds project at Keigwin Middle School has opened doors to new opportunities for nutrition and wellness services for students. The nutrition and physical education staff have already done a fantastic job in promoting good nutrition and physical activity, but our project has allowed them to take their efforts one step further. We’ve been able to utilize grant funds to purchase much needed equipment and resources to allow for wellness initiatives to continue beyond the grant. Students and families have increased access to nutrition and physical education services through community and after school events, school policies have been updated to limit student access to unhealthy foods, and Smarter Lunchrooms strategies have been implemented in the cafeteria to encourage student to take AND eat fruits and vegetables. Keigwin’s nutrition and physical education staff now collaborate on a regular basis to provide comprehensive wellness outreach for the entire school community. It’s been such a rewarding project thus far – I am excited to see it through!
