CDA Legislation and Public Policy CDA has reconfigured its legislative and public policy activities to be more in step with ADA's public policy approach. We are now organized to have in place a Public Policy Coordinator (Formerly "Legislative Network Coordinator") and a State Policy Representative.
Katy Hanlon is the Public Policy Coordinator (PPC) and serves as the key connection/conduit between ADA Government Relations and grassroots leaders. The PPC is responsible to inform CDA members of ADA policy priorities, public policy stances, and to encourage member response to ADA action alerts. The PPC is also to keep the ADA Government Affairs office informed of CDA's public policy state level initiatives and to insure that CDA's actions on key issues are consistent with ADA positions. The PPC also leads the state's delegation to the annual ADA Legislative and Public Policy Workshop (LPPW) held annually in Washington, D.C. The PPC is also charged with being a member of CDA's newly formed Public Policy Panel. The role of the Public Policy Panel is to provide strategic direction with regards to CDA's public polity resources. Katy can be reached by e-mail at khanlon@wtbyhosp.org, or (860) 628-6975.
Sharon Mierzwa is the State Policy Representative (SPR) responsible for gaining consensus within the affiliate on public policy priorities. The SPR tracks the state legislative and regulatory issues of importance to RDs and oversees CDA's response to emerging opportunities and problems. Sharon will be contacting DPG leaders on practice matters, and coordinating appointments with state contacts such as the Governor's office, state and local health officials, and state legislators, to raise the profile of the association. Sharon can be contacted at sharon.mierzwa@snet.net, or at (860) 727-9874, ext 105.
You can register your public policy and legislative priorities as a CDA member/nutrition professional by completing the CDA Member Priorities survey posted on the CDA website. Send your form or any questions or comments to eatrightct@yahoo.com, fax to (203)286-1677, or call (860)413-9355.
To stay up to date with ADA's public policy actions and priorities you are encouraged to visit the ADA website and view the Advocacy and the Profession Tab. There you can sign up for "On the Pulse" an insider's review of ADA's current advocacy events. You can also access issue briefs and position papers which provide the science and background which underlies ADA's public policy work.
