2006 Fall House of Delegate's Meeting

Paula K. Leibovitz
August, 2006

The Fall House of Delegates' meeting took place in mid-September. There are three Mega Issues that were discussed.

  • Issue #1: Student Dues Increase
    • Big Question: What are the appropriate dues for student members in order to provide them with current and future value as members of ADA and to support the strategic needs of the association?
      • There has been no increase in the student dues for seven years though significant student programs have been added over the past five years.
      • ADA student dues are lower than other allied health associations while offering superior or comparable services.
      • BOD recommends a $12 increase in Student dues for FY08.
      • More information may be accessed from:
  •  Issue# 2: Nutrition Care Process and Model Implementation
    • Big Question: How can delegates, members and ADA organizational units foster the implementation of the Nutrition Care Process and Model into daily practice in all practice areas? What opportunities exist that would encourage implementation by members?
      • In March, 2003, the ADA House of Delegates voted to adopt a standardized Nutrition Care Process and Model (NCPM) in order to ensure that nutrition care provided by RDs and DTRs is optimal and measurable through its focus on individual patient, client, or group needs, consistency, documentation, standardized language and use of current and best science.
      • The NCPM is a scientific problem-solving method with far-reaching implications that is related to several other pieces of the Evidence-Based Practice Initiatives.
      • Beginning in 2007, based on the CDR Practice Audit results and after question validation for the RD exam, the Nutrition Care Process and Model will be incorporated into the registration exam for dietitians and dietetic technicians.

  • Issue #3: House of Delegates Governance Structure to Move the Profession Forward
    • Big Question: How does the current configuration of delegates in the HOD impact the ability of the HOD to govern the profession? What adjustments or clarifications would maximize the effectiveness of the body? Are there new roles for delegate representation for maximum House efficiencies?
    • Challenge:
      • To determine optimal representation and mix of delegates (PIDs, At-large, and affiliate) in the House to move the profession forward. To clarify roles of different types of delegates (PIDs, At-large, and affiliate) as representative of their constituencies rather than representing those constituencies.
      • To identify ways to adjust or strengthen delegate effectiveness. To identify effective models for delegate functioning both nationally and within their constituency groups.
    • What we want to know-from Members
      • What do you expect from a delegate and the HOD? Are expectations being met?
    • The full backgrounder, "HOD Backgrounder: House of Delegates Governance Structure to Move the Profession Forward," and related documents are available at

A timeline for discussion and possible implementation of the Dietetics Education Task Force report and recommendations is below.

Spring 2007: The HOD will receive recommendations from the Phase 2 Task Force. The HOD will conduct electronic dialogue about the report over the summer.

Fall 2007: The HOD will conduct a dialogue on the recommendations. If there is consensus about the recommendations, HOD will ask CADE to develop an implementation plan. If consensus has not been reached, a new timeline for addressing unresolved issues will be developed to continue the process.

Spring or Fall 2008: The HOD will conduct a dialogue about the implementation plan. The HOD will provide input to CADE to use in continuing to refine the implementation plan.

A summary Outcomes Report is available here.

The Final Education Task Force report may be accessed by going to the ADA website,
www.eatright.org and logging in as a member. A link to the report is on the opening page.
